ANIBO - Product Design for Autism

Anibo is a project I have done with fellow designers during my volunteer time at an Autism rehabilitation centre. We have noticed children with Autism have certain issues with tactile, regarding this specific problem, we developed research, design and development.

Role: Product Designer

Timeline: Jan, 2020 - Feb, 2020

Software: Adobe Illustrator, Figma, Adobe photoshop, Rhinoceros 3D, Keyshot.

BACKGROUND

There are no cures for ASDs. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a broad term used to describe a group of neurodevelopmental disorders.ASD is found in individuals around the world, regardless of race, culture, or economic background.

What is Autism:

Facts & figures:

  • The quantity of autism patients has reached 30,00,000.

  • The proportion of autism patient: 1:68

  • There is 98.7% No behaviour modification

Major symptoms:

  • Trouble making eye contact

  • Tactile processing disorder

  • Sensitive to changes in surroundings

  • Monotonous and repetitive behaviour

Tactile is the basic foundation of any rehabilitation treatment.

Many children with autism have tactile symptoms such as tactile over-responsivity or under-responsivity, This acan affect a child’s cognitive abillity, basic survivabillity and make intervention training increasingly difficult to perform.

Children:

  • Investigate and record the current training situation and its effect on the children.

  • Find out their preference for favorite colors, toy shapes, and exterior materials.

Guardian:

  • Find out the certain scene that they often get along with their children.

  • Ask about their thoughts and feelings on the tactile problem, training tools, and existing services.

Methodologies

Children:

  • Observe and record how the child interacts with the surroundings and people.

  • Play with children by using pre-prepared lab tools(different materials, shapes, colours).

Guardian:

  • To understand the views and methods of parents and teachers on tactile therapy.

  • Integrate the previous information and conduct deeper communication with the typical guardian.

Samples

We interacted with 8 different children with Autism and interviewed 6 parents and 8 teachers.

FIELD RESEARCH
Findings

Xiaoming Run

  • Parents here have a positive attitude, but almost all of them don’t have enough time to train with their children.

  • Professional training equipment is expensive and not suitable for family use.

  • Children prefer animal-shaped toys to ordinary geometric toys.

Baoding Maternal and Child Health Hospital

  • Some parents don’t have enough confidence in the institution’s service and they want a difference.

  • They look forward to new training products that are more suitable for family use.

  • Children prefer soft and warm materials, some cold and hard materials will make them feel anxious.
